Watercolor Portraits

“I discovered my love of watercolors at age fifteen while I was beginning to explore myself and my identity. I realized that I could capture emotions I couldn't talk openly about through portraits of people I found captivating. I focused on beauty and sadness -- romanticizing the juxtaposition of the two.
Being detail-oriented, I painstakingly labored over each splotch of different color in the skin and strand of hair until the portraits were recognizable. The splatters and drips came last, followed by final touches of pen and ink details. Though some consider watercolor a loose and unpredictable medium, I use it to render precise and fine detail and only allow it to run free in deliberate and controlled areas of my pieces. My focus is on creating detailed portraits that evoke complex emotions through exaggerated colors and abstract textures.”
